HYBRID CONCEPTS HIT THE BLOCK
In the former space of Bistro 8 in Holešovice, Moe has made waves in Prague's foodie scene since its opening mid-year. Owner Kristýna Doupovcová was head chef and manager of Cafe Letka and has now let her own vision shine further east from the Letná neighborhood. Moe works for brunch, dinner and drinks, with a creative menu based on simple ingredients, such as butter beans or Nordic pastries. There’s both indoor and outdoor seating, consistently filled and buzzing.
Meanwhile in Dejvice, Aftertaste is one of the more interesting spaces lately, converging books, coffee, natural wines, and snacks. It occupies the site of what was f/1.0 atelier. The two founders named Adéla have created a hybrid gathering space and filled it with homemade kombucha, orangeade, baked treats (brownies, lemon-poppy seed bread, cinnamon braids), and a standout spicy kimcheese sandwich. There's a decent range of books from small or indie publishers.
Fine Dining and Reimagined Giants
After a summer break, one of Prague’s oldest fine-dining institutions has returned dressed in something new. Chef Daniel Bureš (last seen on Hell’s Kitchen) retains control of the kitchen at V Zátiší in Old Town, pushing forward with Slavic reinterpretations of classics. New dishes being rolled out include pork with carrots, potatoes with a Budapest spread, and even carp pudding. Meanwhile, the physical space has been transformed. Heavy décor and dark furniture have given way to earthy, airy tones. Check their website for opening hours.
Foodie events: Celebrate Oktoberfest Sept. 29 to Oct. 5 at the Greenhouse Restaurant, where Czech tradition will meet Bavarian classics with hearty regional dishes, craft beers, live music, and a vibrant beer-hall atmosphere. And as October approaches, book the Fairmont Hotel's monthly brunch for a lavish buffet including grilled meats, sushi, and even a Bloody Mary station.
Flavor-Forward Newcomers
Here’s something exciting for lovers of authentic Asian (particularly Chinese) regional food: Lá Bù Lá bistro in Vinohrady has officially opened after a 'warm-up' period. Owner Wen, originally from the Chongqing region, has gone big on bold flavour: dumplings, noodles, meats, and adventurous menu items such as century eggs, chicken feet, and eggplant fries. The opening hours are still somewhat variable as they finish ramping up operations, so make sure to check hours.
If sushi, poke bowls, sushi burgers and gyoza are your kind of thing, a new little bistro Her name is Niko in Střešovice delivers. Fresh fish is the standout, plus friendly pricing and a lovely terrace on which to enjoy a casual meal.
SWEET INDULGENCES
The Prague branch of Brno’s donut-slash-fried-bun legend, Kobliha, opened in mid-August. They’re doing batches of about 200 donuts a day, and they’re not just your classic sugar-ring ones. The 'All Stars' menu has been tested over time: with apricot dumplings, pistachio balls, semolina porridge, blueberry cheesecake, raspberry donut among them. Right now it's only open on weekdays, and you should expect some queues.
If you have dietary restrictions—gluten, dairy, histamine—here is a cafe made for you. The founders of Múza Café in Vinohrady understand such needs firsthand, so apart from a few items (tartlets, some breads, certain desserts), much of their menu is gluten-free or dairy-free. Dessert lovers who need those kinds of accommodations will find a safe and delicious space. Coffee is a serious affair here too.
BRANCHING OUT
A new branch of pizzeria Gatto Nero has opened up just above Strossmayerovo náměstí, carrying forward the Vinohrady establishment's promise of fluffy edges and creative toppings (think guanciale and olive dust, mortadella and pistachios, or stracciatella with honey & sage). All washed down with a draft of Birra Moretti, of course.
The German lifestyle food bar dean&david has quickly expanded after its successful Máj department store debut, now opening a sleek second branch on V Celnici street at the bustling Masaryčka corner. Known for fast yet honest food, dean&david serves freshly made bowls, wraps, curries, salads, smoothies, and Nordbeans coffee for busy city hustlers.
