Prague’s Staroměstská metro station on green line A has reopened for entry today after more than six weeks of restricted access caused by a fire, the city’s transport operator has said.

The station was closed on July 5 when flames damaged all three escalators shortly before midnight, forcing firefighters to evacuate dozens of passengers. Crews extinguished the blaze with portable fire extinguishers. No injuries were reported.

According to Prague police, the fire was caused by a thrown object. At the time, one escalator was already under repair, and the flames spread to the other two.

The Prague Public Transport Company (DPP) reopened the station for exits only on July 23 while repair work continued. With the second escalator now back in service, the station can resume normal operations.

“DPP will continue to repair the last, third arm of the escalators,” DPP spokesperson Daniel Šabík said.

Police released security camera footage the day after the fire showing six young men sought in connection with the incident. All were later identified as Czech citizens. They were questioned and released, police said.

The incident disrupted service at one of the busiest stops in Prague’s historic center during the summer tourist season.
