Czech President Petr Pavel has signed into law a major reform of the Criminal Code and judiciary system, bringing the country’s most extensive justice overhaul in years.

The changes affect everything from cannabis possession and sentencing alternatives to tech crimes and protections for victims and children.

The reform, proposed by Justice Minister Pavel Blažek and approved by parliament this spring, aims to reduce prison overcrowding, lower recidivism, and modernize the justice system to reflect today’s social and technological realities. The amendments go into effect Jan. 1, 2026.
